Averting, Minimizing and Addressing Disaster Displacement: Partnerships and Integrated Approaches for Action and Support The objective of this Humanitarian Talk is to raise awareness and understanding on the impacts of a warming climate on humanitarian needs of persons at risk of or affected by disaster displacement. According to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), in 2021, more than 24 million people were newly displaced as a result of disasters linked to natural hazards, a majority of which were weather and climate-related.

In the context of global warming, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recently concluded, in 2022, that climate and weather extremes are increasingly driving displacement in all regions, with Small Island Developing States (SIDS) disproportionately affected. This Humanitarian Talk will explore the possible role of climate change and disaster risk reduction (DRR) policy and action areas such as ‘comprehensive risk management’, ‘mitigation’, ‘adaptation’, and ‘loss and damage’ in the humanitarian tool-box. The Talk aims to explore opportunities and showcase examples of partnerships between humanitarian, DRR, climate change and development actors and highlight the importance of cross-sectoral approaches when managing new and emerging risks and addressing increased humanitarian needs related to the adverse effects of climate change.
